24-36 Months

By 24 months, children's utterances consist of 1-4 word sentences centered on events in the immediate context. They commonly produce words in CV (me), CVC (dog), and CVCV (dada) word shapes. Their vocalizations are often accurate and consonants are correctly produced about 70% of the time. Vowels are also usually correct by this time. They reduce consonant clusters, use stop substitutions for /l, r, s., shop/ sounds, delete final consonants, and are able to produce different consonants in the same word (e.g., cup). They use intonation appropriately for questions and statements and produce stress differences in two syllable words (happy).

Clip 1. The child produced 1 – 4 word sentences. She reduces clusters ("pik" for "pink"), leaves off final consonants ("ni" for "night"), and uses stop substitutions for /l, r, s, shop/sounds.
