Infants continue babbling using VC, CV, and CVC syllable shapes. Babbling is both reduplicated (e.g. "mama") and variegated (e.g. "badapada" and "bubabobu"). The infant will produce an increasing frequency of vocalizations including variations in stress with more adult-like intonation patterns. Vowels that infants typically produce are front and central, and consonants are labial and alveolar. The infant's utterances typically consist of 2 to 5 syllables. Between 9 and 12 months of age, infants begin to use pointing along with vocalizations to request or declare their intentions.
