Language and Cognitive Aging Laboratory (LANCAL)

Director

Joyce L. Harris, Ph.D., CCC-SLP.

The primary goal of our research is to contribute to the existing knowledge base in the area of language and cognitive aging, focusing on memory processes and the comprehension of authentic text-based information. Our research combines the perspectives of linguistics, cognitive psychology, cultural anthropology, and communication sciences and disorders to investigate cognitive communicative processes in normal and clinical populations of adults. The investigation of cultural influences on normal and disordered communicative behaviors provides a unique backdrop to our research efforts.

An equally important goal of our laboratory is to provide supervised experiential research instruction for undergraduate, masters- and doctoral-level students in the Communication Sciences and Disorders Program at The University of Texas at Austin. In doing so, our aim is to produce informed consumers and future producers of research.

The following are some of our recent and ongoing research projects:

  • Health Literacy in Stroke Survivors
  • Health Literacy in Older and Younger Adults
  • Executive Function in Discourse Comprehension
  • Reminiscence Training for Caregivers of Persons with Memory Impairment
