Ph.D. Program Course Work

The student, with the advice and approval of his/her advisory committee, must complete the following course requirements:

1. Program Specialization: Courses and seminars that provide in-depth knowledge of his/her chosen area of specialization.

2. Research Tools: A minimum of 15 semester hours in research design and data analysis, including at least one basic course in statistics.

3. Related Area: A minimum of nine semester hours of graduate credit in a field of study outside Communication Sciences and Disorders. A related area is defined as the development of a content area as opposed to the development of research techniques.

4. Required CSD courses: Students are required to enroll in at least two CSD doctoral level seminars.

5. Required teaching course: Students are required to complete the course offered by the Center for Teaching Effectiveness (CSD 398T), or receive a waiver on the basis of a similar course or prior college teaching experience at another institution.

The specific list of courses and seminars to fulfill these requirements constitutes the student's work program, which must be approved by the student's advisory committee. The Graduate Studies Committee (GSC) of the Department must review and approve each work program (see attached work program checklist in MS Word format).

All Communication Sciences and Disorders courses in graduate work programs should be at the graduate level. No more than 20 percent of the courses on a work program may be taken on a credit/non-credit basis. At the discretion of the instructor, independent study courses such as CSD 380E and internship courses such as CSD 380F may be included in the 20 percent. No other CSD course may be taken credit/non-credit by graduate students. An incomplete is not permitted in graduate courses except under unusual circumstances. Auditing may be done only with the consent of the instructor of the course.
