Applicants to the program must meet the requirements for admission specified in the Graduate Admission Bulletin and summarized below. Satisfying these minimum requirements, however, does not guarantee admission. Each applicant's credentials are scrutinized by each member of the faculty admissions committee. No single criterion, such as grade point average or GRE score, is given undue weight in the decision process; every attempt is made to assess the special strengths that the applicant might bring to the program. Applicants should have all prerequisite courses completed prior to desired Fall admission.
Note: Separate applications are required for admission into the M.A., Au.D. and Ph.D programs. A Master's degree is a requirement for formal entry into the Ph.D. program. If you are interested in Ph.D. study but do not have a Master's degree, please complete application requirements for M.A./ Ph.D. program.
Students with a bachelor's degree in another field may take the prerequisite courses at UT Austin but must first be admitted to the College of Communication as a Degree Holder/Non-Degree Seeking (NDS) student, a special category of undergraduate transfer admission. NDS admission is highly selective and is based primarily on a student’s academic achievement in his or her previous undergraduate institution(s).
To begin the process, students must first email the Graduate Program Coordinator regarding the application process.
The online NDS application can be found at:

Admission into the Non-Degree Seeking program does not guarantee admission into our Graduate program. Non-Degree Seeking students still need to apply for admission to our Master's or Au.D. program after completing the required prerequisites.
Our Master's program requires a total of 375 clock hours of practicum, which includes 25 hours of observation. Doctor of Audiology (AuD) students are required to complete 1820 hours, including clinical practicum here at the Speech and Hearing Center and off-campus with their fourth year externship.
ALL students re encouraged to complete all observation hours before entering the Graduate program in CSD here at UT Austin. Observation hours should be properly documented and certified (including signature of supervisor and ASHA certification number) by the institution at which they were earned.
In most cases students will be able to count observation or clinical practicum hours earned at their undergraduate institutions, provided that they are properly documented and certified by the institution at which they were earned.
Transfer is not automatic. Students enrolled in another graduate program must apply the usual way, and their applications will be considered along with all others received by the CSD deadline date. Once a transfer student is admitted, we will review previous coursework to determine which courses can be counted towards the students’ degree and certification plans.
Generally, students won't be asked to repeat a graduate course they have taken elsewhere, provided the course meets the approval of our faculty as a substitute for one of our own courses. Only a limited number of courses may be waived in this fashion. Typically, credit is granted in the form of a waiver of the requirement to take our version of the course. Generally, in its place, a student will be expected to substitute another course from a different area of our department.
