Chelsea Privette is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences. She received her Bachelor’s in Spanish with a concentration in Linguistics from Wake Forest University, her Master of Education in Communication Disorders from North Carolina Central University, and her doctoral degree in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences with a minor in Public Health from the University of Arizona. She was a postdoctoral fellow in the inaugural cohort of the Provost’s Early Career Fellows Program at the University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Privette’s research centers racially and linguistically minoritized children in preschool and kindergarten. Her work is concerned with de-pathologizing language variation (including communication practices in dis/abled communities) and collaborating with education professionals across disciplines to foster more inclusive classrooms for children with and without communication disabilities. Her research interests include developing culturally sustaining assessment practices in language contact environments with an emphasis on Black Language and Spanish; deconstructing raciolinguistic policies and practices in schools; and producing undergraduate and graduate curriculum in culturally responsive practice in the speech, language, and hearing professions.
