Joan M. Balash

Joan M. Balash, M.A., CCC-A is the audiology coordinator of the Speech and Hearing Center. Additional responsibilities include clinical supervision in all areas of audiology, with special interests in the evaluation of infant hearing sensitivity, counseling issues with hearing-impaired persons, and clinical research. Prior to her appointment to the Department in 1990, Ms. Balash was the audiologist at the Austin State School.

Jessica H. Franco

Jessica H. Franco, PhD, CCC-SLP, BCBA-D, joined the UTSHC as a Clinical Assistant Professor in summer, 2011. She holds degrees from the University of Kansas and University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Franco has focused her clinical practice and research on assessment and treatment of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).  She founded a diagnostic and training center in San Antonio and has traveled as a consultant for schools and autism centers around the country. Dr. Franco has experience with a variety of approaches for teaching communication skills and methods for reducing severe challenging behaviors. She is active in many autism-related committees and boards, including the Texas Autism Resource and Research Center, Texas Autism Council Advisory Task Force, and the Autism Community Network.

Cydney M. Medford

Cydney M. Medford, M.S., CCC-SLP, joined the UTSHC as a clinical faculty supervisor in January of 2009. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Baylor University in Speech Pathology and Audiology. Ms. Medford has worked in a variety of settings including the public schools, private practice, home health, residential treatment for brain injured individuals, and outpatient rehabilitation.

Her primary interests are in adult speech/language/cognitive disorders related to aphasia and brain injury.

Madhu Sundarrajan

Madhu Sundarrajan, PhD, CCC-SLP joined the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders in September 2015. Dr. Sundarrajan received her training from The University of Texas at Dallas and has worked as a clinical supervisor of graduate students in Texas and California. Her research interests include exploring speech and language development in children with hearing loss. At UTSHC, Dr. Sundarrajan focuses on educating students in providing appropriate intervention for young children with speech and language disorders.
