Joan M. Balash, M.A., CCC-A is the audiology coordinator of the Speech and Hearing Center. Additional responsibilities include clinical supervision in all areas of audiology, with special interests in the evaluation of infant hearing sensitivity, counseling issues with hearing-impaired persons, and clinical research. Prior to her appointment to the Department in 1990, Ms. Balash was the audiologist at the Austin State School.

Angi Carey, Au.D., CCC-A, is a Clinical Assistant Professor supervising both graduate and honors undergraduate audiology students in the UT Speech and Hearing Clinic.  She received her doctorate of audiology (AuD) from Salus University in 2009 and her M.A. from the University of Colorado in 1995.  Angi has worked as a clinical audiologist in Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas. She also worked as a regional audiology coordinator for the Colorado Department of Health and Environment. Publications include journal articles in The Volta Review, Reading Research Quarterly, Journal of Literacy Research and the National Reading Conference Yearbook.

Jessica H. Franco, PhD, CCC-SLP, BCBA-D, joined the UTSHC as a Clinical Assistant Professor in summer, 2011. She holds degrees from the University of Kansas and University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Franco has focused her clinical practice and research on assessment and treatment of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).  She founded a diagnostic and training center in San Antonio and has traveled as a consultant for schools and autism centers around the country. Dr. Franco has experience with a variety of approaches for teaching communication skills and methods for reducing severe challenging behaviors. She is active in many autism-related committees and boards, including the Texas Autism Resource and Research Center, Texas Autism Council Advisory Task Force, and the Autism Community Network.

Cydney M. Medford

Cydney M. Medford, M.S., CCC-SLP, joined the UTSHC as a clinical faculty supervisor in January of 2009. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Baylor University in Speech Pathology and Audiology. Ms. Medford has worked in a variety of settings including the public schools, private practice, home health, residential treatment for brain injured individuals, and outpatient rehabilitation.

Her primary interests are in adult speech/language/cognitive disorders related to aphasia and brain injury.

Mary Anne Nericcio, PhD CCC-SLP, joined the UTSHC as a clinical bilingual supervisor in the spring of 2011, and was recently appointed as a Clinical Assistant Professor.  She obtained all three of her degrees from The University of Texas at Austin.  Dr. Nericcio has previous experience in the public schools as a speech pathologist and school administrator along with service as an accreditation specialist with the Texas Education Agency.  She has many years of experience as a bilingual speech pathologist in the public schools, higher education, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing facilities, and private practice settings. 

Her primary areas of interest include bilingual clinical supervision and teaching, English Language Learners, and Language Literacy and the Speech Pathologist.
