Vision Statement

Our vision is to be one of the best research and academics programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders in the United States. This vision is to be accomplished by achieving national and international recognition for its high quality research, innovative graduate programs, outstanding undergraduate instruction, and model training approaches for educating superior researchers and practitioners.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide comprehensive programs of education and scholarship that will advance the understanding of human communication and related disorders; to build a foundation of knowledge and skills that encourages competent clinical practice for the professional lifetime; and to promote a culture of collaboration and respect for others.

Program Goals

Aim #1: Increase visibility of CSD major and its contributions to the University and Community

    Strategic Actions

    1. Develop and implement a University-wide general education course

    2. Strengthen networking with alumni

    3. Develop and implement a program for University and surrounding community to enhance awareness of speech, language, and hearing services

    4. Improve Web site to provide more detailed information about the program and easier provide navigation

Aim #2: Enhance the quality of undergraduate instruction

    Strategic Actions

    1. Enhance course offerings: Develop and implement course for honors students

    2. Increase the involvement of undergraduate students in research experiences. Develop a course where each faculty member will present research program

    3. Develop and implement a plan to enable clinical practica

    4. Increase the diversity of student body by establishing links with other institutions

Aim #3: Strengthen PhD program while maintaining current size of MA & AuD programs

    Strategic Actions

    1. Establish a mentor network for prospective doctoral students during undergraduate and clinical graduate programs

    2. Increase student support for scholarly activities

    3. Enhance current areas of strength in child language, communication neuroscience, and bilingual CSD

    4. Explore collaborative projects/courses with other institutions via the use of technology

    5. Enhance recruitment efforts from other disciplines and from diverse racial/ethnic backgrounds

    6. Develop an identifiable curriculum for doctoral students

Aim #4: Enhance areas of research strengths while maintaining high level of excellence

    Strategic Actions

    1. Provide continued support for faculty scholarship activities and grant pursuits

    2. Enhance dissemination of research through increased publications

    3. Expand and enhance research activities/support in the area of multicultural issues

    4. Identify key researchers for collaboration and potential recruitment

    5. Expand participation in consortia and institutes
